About Fatih
Fatih is the historic peninsula — the walled city, bounded by the Golden Horn, the Marmara and the land walls, and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Sultanahmet, Süleymaniye, the Grand Bazaar and Eminönü are all within its borders, which means the district carries a weight of history that no other part of Istanbul can match, along with the visitor numbers that come with it. Away from the monuments it is an ordinary, densely populated, working part of the city. The quarters that interest international buyers most are Balat and Fener, terraced streets of narrow painted houses above the Golden Horn that have drawn steady restoration interest over the past decade. Transport is comprehensive: Marmaray stops at Yenikapı, Sirkeci, Cankurtaran and Kumkapı, the M1A and M1B metro lines run from Yenikapı, and the T1 tram threads past Sultanahmet, Beyazıt and Eminönü. On price per square metre Fatih is among the lowest of our districts, but that average conceals a wide gap between unmodernised stock and restored period property. Two cautions worth stating plainly: heritage protection limits what may be altered on many buildings, and any renovation project here should be costed with professional advice before you commit.
