Restored Three-Bedroom Duplex in Galata, Beyoğlu

A duplex across the top two floors of an early twentieth-century building in Galata, restored throughout in 2021. The work retained what was worth keeping — the window proportions, the stone stair, sections of original floor — while replacing the services entirely. The lower level has an open kitchen and dining room with a sitting area, and the upper level holds three bedrooms and a small study landing that opens onto a roof terrace. From the terrace the Galata Tower stands close by to the north and the Golden Horn is visible to the west. There is no lift, and the building stair is the original one: attractive, narrow and steep, and the single biggest thing to test on a viewing. Heritage protection applies to the exterior, so external alterations would require consent. The location is as central as Istanbul gets for a walker: Karaköy and the water are five minutes downhill, the T1 tram and the Tünel funicular are both close, and the M2 metro at Şişhane is a short climb.
